Summary of key points:

SESSION 1 – 08:30 to 12:00            Fire Safety Distance & Refuge

Objectives:

  • The Delegate would understand the importance & relevance of this Law & Standards.
  • The Delegate would gain knowledge on the different wall types including the openings, their performance in fire & choice of walls types.
  • The Delegate would gain knowledge & tools on how to position buildings in relation to boundaries & other buildings to prevent the spread of fire.
  • The Delegate would understand the methodology to calculate & draw / depict the fire safety distance required.
  • The delegate would understand the necessity of the requirement for refuge areas.
  • The delegate would gain knowledge on the quantitative requirements necessary to achieve the required for the health & safety of all occupants of a building.

Course content:

  1. What does NBR & SANS 10400 T say about Fire Protection
  2. Safety Distance (wall types)
  3. Safety Distance to the Lateral Boundary
  4. Safety Distance on the Same Site
  5. Safety Distance Sprinkler System & Structural Stability
  6. Safety Distance Examples
  7. Where are Refuges required?
  8. What the Standards requirements are for Refuges?
  9. Where Refuges should be positioned?
  10. The minimum quantitative dimensions for Refuges including examples.

Delegates would receive the notes & an Excel calculator for Safety Distances.

SESSION 2 – 12:45 to 16:30    Energy usage in buildings – Hot Water, Walls, Roofs & lights including a comparison regarding the different fenestration compliance methods.

 Objectives:

  • The Delegate would understand the importance & relevance of this Law & Standards.
  • The Delegate would gain knowledge on how to comply with the law on Hot Water Supply & the various methods available to achieve compliance.
  • The Delegate would gain knowledge on the importance of roof & wall insulation and the methods to achieve compliance for various climatic zones.
  • The Delegate would gain knowledge on method of compliance for the energy used for artificial lighting.
  • To develop the professionals understanding of the different methods of calculating the Fenestration compliance and which method is better suited to meet your client’s needs.
  • This workshop demonstrates an example building that clearly shows the different outcomes using the different methods for fenestration.

  1. What does NBR & SANS 10400 XA & SANS 204 say about Energy Efficiency?
  2. Hot water requirements & compliance.
  3. Wall Compliance.
  4. Roof Compliance.
  5. Artificial Lighting – energy usage.
  6. The impacts of using the different methods of achieving compliance for fenestration. These impacts include initial and lifetime costs of the building. It also demonstrates the impact of Architectural massing and form on the overall environmental impact of the building.

Delegates would receive notes & a Beta Version of an Excel calculator for compliance in terms of the artificial ventilation or air conditioning method.
